New Sanctions for Iran

The UN has just imposed new sanctions on Iran for their nuclear program. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on an official visit in Tajikistan, dismissed the new resolution. “From right and from left, they adopt sanctions, but for us they are annoying flies, like a used tissue,” he said.

One journalist (David Sanger) says that, “No one in the Obama White House believes that, by themselves, the newest rounds of sanctions against Iran’s military-run businesses, its shipping lines and its financial institutions will force Tehran to halt its 20-year-long drive for a nuclear capability.”

My question is, if this is true then why bother with sanctions in the first place?
