Grey Goose vodka, and chilled Topo Chico.  Nice on a hot day.

I just checked the 14-day forecast for Texas and it’s 96-98F with little rain.  I start to melt in the high 80’s and turn the A/C on at about 78F.  And Americans consider their northern neighbour’s weather inhospitable?  Heh, you can dress for the cold, but with scorching heat I’m assuming most people stay inside.  And have a drink or two.

96-98 in July is cool.  Not uncommon to hit 105 or even 108. We’ve had a lot of rain this year and it’s been cooler.  Just grilled burgers and now eating them, with my vodka and Topo.

Whew, if that’s cool, I’m a polar bear!  Sure, we get up to the mid-90’s occasionally, for a day or two, but we tend to wilt or drop like flies, complain incessantly until it passes, stay indoors.  Where I live, the highest recorded temperature was 97F; 108 would likely kill us.  I’ll take -20 to 108 any day.  And how do you stand in front of a hot grill to cook?  I think I’d go straight for the drink.

Here in Calgary, the next 7 days are forcasted as:  (c/f)
18/64, 20/68, 25/77, 24/75, 23/73, 24/75, 24/75

I prefer it in the 28/85 range for high-summer, but my inner thermometer is a little broken after visiting vegas in july, so I don’t really feel overheated until it gets into the 34+/94+ ranges… (or if the humidex is high….  dry heat is easier).

Yeah, but what are you drinking.

It’s been in the low-mid 90’s with more than average rain.  Strange. That’s June weather, not July. I’ll probably have some chilled vodka and Topo by the pool tomorrow, after I mow the lawn for the last time before my Russia trip (Monday).  There is also vodka in the forecast for Russia.

Bruce, please take notes—don’t worry about taking lots of photos like most Americans do! I’m counting on you to notice little details that cause you to make cool connections about Russian society—how’s that for a definitive instruction? Good luck, and don’t get too close to any journalists there.

I’ll try to take notes while sampling vodka.

I’m on vacation in Michigan at the northern end of the lower peninsula (Nhoj, how about you and your compatriots come up with an easier name for this place like the Yoopers did?) and bought a four-pack of the local brew, Horny Monk by Petosky Brewing.  It’s 6.9% ABV and imitates a dark Belgian triple.  Not bad at all, but on the bitter side for me.

While many folks believe that our state motto is Say Yoop to Michigan, it is in fact “If you seek a great peninsula, look around you”. As schoolchildren, we learned this with horror. It has penis in it. Children from Ohio mocked us endlessly.

At least you are on the proper Lower P or, as we call it near D-town, the Hand that Rocks the World. The Upper P is consider by many to be a mere jetty or, penis luan.

Happy travels.

I’m happy to have missed a potential mocking term (“you pee”) as a teenager, having grown up in central Wisconsin, where UP simply means the upper peninsula. Plenty of other mocking terms surrounded my little head, of course, so I suppose I shouldn’t celebrate too drastically.

Another day Up North, and it was a boozer:
1. Leinenkugel Summer Shandy
2. A Brooklyn cocktail
3. A glass of Sonoma Valley Zinfandel
4. A finger of Zara rum with water

I’m going to bed now.

I got clarification from a local about the difference between Up North and the U.P.  “Up North” refers to the northern part of the lower peninsula, and the U.P. is so rural and sparsely populated that most people think it’s Canada.

The last night of vacationing up north and it was an Old Fashioned and the last can of Horny Monk (which has a taste I did not acquire).

This week I had Pliny The Elder | Russian River Brewing Company - being usually on most top 20 beer lists it was excellent of course.
