I recently had some Pappy 10, and I kind of understand the hype now.  I don’t think it’s worth the price you often pay on the secondary market, but it was the best bourbon I’ve ever had.  Just not thaaaat much better.

At some point hairs are being split but the price keeps going up.  I suppose it’s marketing at work convincing us to justify the diminishing return, which includes admittance to a select club who can say they had it.

Of course, I would not snub an invitation to try Pappy, so if one of you can put me on the list. . .

It was a Canadian-American love-fest when I mixed a Boilermaker with Evan Willams bourbon and Moosehead beer.

I like scotch slightly more than bourbon overall.  If I were to price the Pappy 10 as a scotch, I’d say it’s in the $120-150 range, which is about double it’s retail price, but the secondary market prices it around $500.  The Pappy 23 runs about $250 retail, $2500 secondary.  I’ve only ever had one whiskey that was retail priced in that range, and while I liked it, I would definitely never pay that much (Laphroaig 27, it was actually a bit of a let down that I only kinda liked it).

And right now…
1 BS laphroaig 10 (cask)
1 BS lagavulin 16
1/2 ounce ardbeg uigeadail

I’m playing with the blend.  I made it once and it was ridiculously amazing (IMO), so I’m trying to refind the ratios.  I think it needs a little more of the uigaedail, but it has smoke flavor that lasts for days.  The laphroaig and lagavulin add floral and honey sweetness, which rounds it out nicely, but it’s that everlasting smoke flavor that I love the most.

I’m going back to wine, since I notice I’m becoming a bit anemic and my sodium is down. Gotta put on the brakes. Which brings up an interesting subject (by some twisted logic):

What tastes worse neat - mescal or aquavit?

Good heavens!  I was in Costco in an affluent area where I saw a unicorn - a $9,999 bottle of 50 year old scotch - Benromach, single malt, Speyside.  My birthday is coming up, so if you guys want to pool your money to show your appreciation for what I’ve done for this forum, then I will humbly accept.

edit:  how’d that photo get turned upside down?

See, I’m not as greedy as you, I just want a bottle of Laphroaig 32 for my birthday.

Considering how good looking I am and how I class this place up, I don’t think I’m being greedy.

I finally got a night off to hit the bottle, so I had two - a Sidecar and a chilled nigori sake.  It’s nice to be off the wagon.
