...That is the question.

I have contemplated using the ignore function over the past few months, reluctantly, and wonder what it means and how it works.  I have not yet utilized this option mainly due to the fact that it represents everything I despise and it remains my intent to preserve the privilege, we all share, of freedom of speech.  The conduct demonstrated by the veteran patrons at this forum has been invaluable as an example of how to maintain a reasonable attitude with a little objectivity and a lot of patience.  This works extremely well when posters are thoughtful when crafting their posts, remaining aware of the many people reading those posts, and showing the proper courtesy.  It is common practice, with critical thinkers, to examine what they are reading and make sense of it no matter how nonsensical it may appear to be.  Like a puzzle.  You are looking for that little kernel of greatness.  The take away.  Something.  Anything.  You struggle to find it and when it doesn’t appear the disappointment takes hold.

When you put someone on ignore does that exclude any posts submitted by that individual?  If that individual starts a thread is the entire thread omitted or does it continue, as usual, consisting only of the contributions of the other posters?  Is the protocol to inform the poster you are putting them on ignore?

I am considering this, as disheartening as it is, primarily due to the fact that I enjoy the flow of conversation that occurs when everyone gets a chance to share and explore ideas.  Where topics move forward, without derailment, understanding is reached and there is ample opportunity to learn and discover things collectively in a way we may not accomplish alone.  Entertaining, fun and equal.

Please advise.  Many thanks.

Ignore just means you’re not notified of a post by that person, does nothing to atop their posting.  You can “view” any post of theirs you wish.  My ignore list is more than 35, many long gone.  Others who post back in reply are still seen.  Least offense measure you can take.  You can avoid the really stupid, crazy, vicious or just plain boring and they do not know it.

To be perfectly honest I find it a strange feature. People find it useful, clearly, but to me the idea of having to block the display of a post you don’t want to read in order to avoid reading it is very odd. On the other hand, on some other forums the Vapidity Specialists can create so much intellectual chaos—so much brain wreckage, that it can be hard to navigate through the noise in order to find any actual signal. In those cases I can see it, but I tend to just cut off the topic from my attention.

I may be abnormal in this respect though. Obviously there’s enough interest that the feature has been created, the program written and tested and such.

I am with you on this, Skep.  I find it puzzling, as well. There are a few people who I find rather tedious or enraging, but, I simply scan their posts quickly and go on.

I know some people get upset when threads are derailed, but it doesn’t bother me, except when Mario did it because it was soooooo predictable. In most cases, the conversation usually meanders back to the topic and if it doesn’t, one can gently intervene.

Maybe I am so tolerant because I am one of those guilty of doing it and, if everyone put me on ignore, I’d be talking to myself.

Hmmm….that seems to happen occasionally…...

And ignoring the source doesn’t change anything—the topics still get derailed ... quite easily it seems.

That problem is more ensconced than merely the posts of the one pushing peoples’ buttons.

It just stops you from getting notified when people on ignore post. But given that many times much of the best conversation is side topic all you will end of doing is missing it or playing catch up. For me, I’m mainly here for the conversation and that’s what I focus on in a conversation, not posting to try and impress people or posting for posterity.

I don’t use the Ignore feature because I’ve learned how to avoid reading posts by dill weeds.  Only two people were on my list because they were just plain trolls trying to wreck an interesting thread.  BroMo would be on my list if he wasn’t already quarantined, but the forum hasn’t had people like him in a long time.

If you ignore someone, you’ll never find out what they drink.  The end result is that you may miss out on some really great beers.

Your perspectives are greatly appreciated and definitely shed some light on a dark decision which I am now, thankfully, closer to making.  The thought of banning anyone is a terrible option and hopefully as rare as it seems to be and only implemented as a last resort.  When the egos of a few seem to drown out the voices of the many I remind myself that it is the exception not the rule and let it slide.  I realize they are unaware they are doing it, when they are doing it, and we would all benefit greatly to remember to delude responsibly.

If you are about to ignore me, let me know and I’ll make my beer recommendations now.

Actually, I thought she was talking about me because of my alleged narcissism, which, of course is preposterous, as this reply clearly demonstrates.

I use the old-fashioned method of ‘not reading or responding to people I don’t want to’.

Usually works quite well.

No way, man, I am not robbing myself of the lunacy the two of you bring to the table.

I know I have less choice these days, I have to at least scan all posts.

But, like Skep has suggested before, I can do so without any real rise in my emotional state. I can just raise and eyebrow or two, or shrug my shoulders, learn… then move on.
