I know I have less choice these days,

You have no choice whatsoever.  It’s all an illusion, and everything you do was foreordained from the moment of the Big Bang.  You’re just a pawn in the game, man, pretending that you are administering, chosing, etc.  WE’RE ALL JUST PAWNS!!!!  Or prawns.  Can’t remember.

One time years ago, I was in town grocery shopping when I overheard two young American girls discussing the ingredients of a product. “What are ‘prawns’?” one of them asked so I politely butted in and explained that prawns are shrimp. The pretty young lasses said “oh, right” and then promptly put me on ‘ignore’.

I’m learning to set my expectations lower with time and this way it doesn’t matter as much.

This is what prompted my question in the first place.  Lowering my expectations is something I am unwilling to do.  It used to be common, less frequently now, people would show up posting an essay or thesis.  One by one the regulars would methodically challenge bit by bit pointing out very clever observations with respectful objectivity.  There was definitely something to learn from that process and, I imagine, no one was more appreciative than the individuals as they revised their work before submitting it to their professors.

As far as the flow of a thread I agree that it is only natural for side conversations to take place, although, I think of it more like a detour rather than a derailment as it eventually veers back on track.  I enjoy those as well.  I have reserved the ignore feature for those rare posters who chime in with something out of left field and clearly have no interest in learning anything.  The “thread killers.”  It seems to be the most reasonable response…until the “punch them in the throat” option becomes available.  I kid.

Guess what!  My cat threw up on my pillow last night and I woke up with vomit in my hair.

How do you know which cat?

That makes me think of “This is Spinal Tap” in the discussion about the demise of their various drummers…one’s death had something to do with choking on vomit and one of the band members said, “It was actually someone else’s vomit” and another replied, “You can’t really dust for vomit (like for fingerprints).”

Talk about derailing a thread….

I guess on an ignore thread this is not a derail.

That’s probably from too much egg and sweet stuff for breakfast.

Should clear out in a few hours or so at most.

It may be a derail, but it was just SO INTERESTING, I had to share it with my friends.
