Wow! A very educational historical summation.  I’m still reeling from reading the Puritan’s delusions, the part about John Cotton and America, the usage of Old Testament language, of America being the chosen one before the Almighty.  Well worth the time to research further.  Thanks for posting this.

Nothing about muscular Christianity, I see.

I’m sure there are more. American religious history is fascinating.

I’m also fascinated by religious history. But I find it troubling. This article seems to be written by a believer who asserts the American God, not as an archetype or social concept but as a person. But the article, to me seems to demonstrate quite explicitly how Gods are reifications and rationalizations of political expediency. In other words, God changes his mind with uncanny coincidence at exactly the time and place as humans change their own minds…. my secular bias perhaps. I must also say that I’m suspicious of how writings like these idealize their characters… omitting what seem to me to be relevant facts that are less than flattering. More secular bias perhaps.

I do appreciate that we disagree and still find common interests though. It’s essential to read up on ones history.

So the Puritans were led to the New World by a Jim Jones/Moses preacher to leave their homeland and seek the promised land?  American history is founded on malarky?  That’s it!  I’m staying drunk from now on.

What’s your point?
