I don’t see “the live and let live policy”, that the religious moderates and many non-believers promote, as being workable in the long run.  There are no supernatural beings.  Having a population of people who to an extent live their lives based on what they think a fictional being wants them to do, will not result in a good outcome for humanity.  There is going to be a terrible bloody war.  I suspect the religious are going to win.
I am contemplating the notion that it would be safer for me to take up a religion as a public persona.  I’m trying to find the safest religion available (safest = winning).  The trouble is even amongst classes of relgions (i.e. Allah based, Jesus based) there are wars between the subclasses.  Being Jewish (my original MO) is semi-safe.

But the original point of this thread is that there is going to be a religious war to eliminate us.  Maybe not in my lifetime, but eventually.  I regret not bringing my kids up religious.

This post is supposed to motivate people to think, right? Or change? Otherwise I can’t imagine you believe this. Statistically younger people increasingly don’t give a shit about religion. And they’re growing up still not giving a shit. Nones are everywhere and drastically outnumber the extreme fundamentalists across the globe. The countries with the best weapons and biggest militaries care about religion only as far as it remains marketable, and it’s increasingly becoming toxic in the market because sex sells not complete bullshit child-molesting-and-getting-away-with-it organizations. Nobody is buying this product anymore let alone willing to fight over it, other than to stabilize an underdeveloped part of the world, which mark my words will sell their religious convictions the minute they taste complacency with mediocrity only capitalism and democracy know how to provide. If not, so what? Poverty will do what our troops don’t need to.

A war? Fuck that! Religions will continue to marginalize the truly devote and avoid associating with the truly fundamental in their attempt to fit in with social systems that see right through their illusory product, shame, blame, and guilt.

We surround ourselves with like thinking people.  The nature of my job results in my exposure to not so like thinking people.  Because of this, I am not as optimistic as you.

Post Scriptum: I have the honor of passing along to a grandchild my Grandmother’s 134 year old recipe for Polish Catholic Potato Pankakes - scrumptious. And not to brag (too much) but i have people who fly me into town for a weekend visit but i have to do my Gramma’s recipe for them smile

Post Post Script.

They taste better when they’re cooked in Lard, but then they are not kosher.

Not lard—schmaltz, that is, chicken fat.  Get real

ah yes, I remember schmaltz.

My wife is a shikza.  The first time she tried to make latkas they were the most fantastic tasting latkas I ever had.  Then she told me her secret.
LARD!  My grandmother would have rolled over in her grave… that is if dead people could roll over.

My advice is to avoid the news for a month.  Get back to that hobby you gave up but still enjoy.  Volunteer to do something worthwhile.  Work puzzles.  Join a gym and exercise.  After a month, you’ll realize that the world is not so dire.  News is made of calamities.  A jillian human interactions that went well are never reported.

Addiction to media news causes paranoia.

In schmaltz, they’re latkes.  In lard, they’re hash brown potatoes.  Serve ‘em with sausage.

GASP!

How did you know that my wife’s name was Wendy Wyatt the 3rd, and why do you want me to take my mind off of her?

See?!  Things could be worse!  Be thankful for what you have.  Or don’t have.  Seriously, I’m less concerned than you seem to be.  Have sharpened up my big wooden cross so I can whack them if need be.

Good point.

But I bet if I served my wife’s latkas to a Hassidic Jew he would crave them.  Schmaltz would be a thing of the past.

Do not worry jr. If a war breaks out and people are looking for atheist Jews, I will happily hide you in my basement. Quite frankly, given my squeeish fangirl love of quite a few atheist Jewish intellectual types, there are several people I would enthusiastically make that offer to, although perhaps then it takes on a creepy tone.

Me: I… I… I have waited for this moment all my life. I have a totally legitimate reason to keep you in my attic. Please, right this way! Quickly! Hey what… what do you mean “You’ll take your chances?! HEY!!”

If it’s optimism you want I’ll introduce her to you one day. She’s surprisingly blond with great teeth and a smile that will make you forget all about ISIS.

I’m not really an intellectual… I’m kind of like everybody else.
