Brother Mario,  Firstly I was responding to gregory’s post Jesus Lied?  where the “we” is referenced as well as the “they” , so I am not talking to or about anyone, just adding my comment to the post.  Saying “my skepticism has manipulated people into separate groups” I will take as a compliment,  Since when did skepticism become a power tool?  I believe God is an idea.  JB:  I will assume you are referring to me, a newbie, as the “new nut”.  So far I feel surrounding by some pretty stale ones at best.  You also think that skeptics like myself should be “slapped around”?  Nice rational thinking.  Somebody around here tell me, is atheist somehow synonymous with angry and defensive, because that’s what I’ve experienced so far.

No atheist is synonymous with angry and offensive. Welcome.

Oh shit dude, you got the wrong idea. Yes I’m often angry. And yes I’m often defensive. And sure maybe sometimes I’m more than slightly sexually deviant, but…wait what are we talking about?

No I’m sorry if I came off as aggressive toward you. I don’t think skeptics should be “slapped around” nor do I remember saying so or calling you a “new nut.” In fact I’m a huge fan of skepticism. And I’m glad that you being one are here.

I started a thread addressing the issue of demanding your religion be the One True Religion. Because without that these stories and inspirations are everywhere for whoever wants to seek them out. It’s part of the reason that I love being and atheists, because I don’t have to look to one book or one interpretation of one book when I can look anywhere across all cultures for inspiration, meaning and hope without the shame of deviating from my One True Religion.

Brilliant!
Just copied and pasted into my Big Book of Atheist Wisdom.

Yours thankfully,

I recognize you. You come and go. What’s your deal? You should stay and help me battle the legion of believers here and around the world. We’re the good guys. They’re the bad. It’s the ultimate showdown between reason and old white people. Dues are paid monthly.

Hey Jb! Yes, I used to spend more time here, but not so much recently.
The peaks and troughs of life limit the time available for crusading.
Just finishing up a six month term in Madrid, surrounded by people who keep asking me which church I go to. Now inspired and fully motivated to become a fanatical activist for the sake of humanity (and my kids).
Putting together a YouTube channel, blog, Facebook, Twitter etc. and going full-time militant from next Monday.
You’re invited. I’ll send you a link. Dues paid daily.

Saweet!

Actually, I think it was Mario who called her the “new nut”, which irked me, but she had to meet him sooner or later.

I have often pondered about how aggressive and/or smirky some folks on PR can be and it always makes me smile wryly because they are the ones who usually complain how awful it is that religion brings out the worst in people.  It’s not religion.  It’s people; lots of things bring out the “worst” in them. (Is anyone counting?  I’ve written that at least a thousand times).  Why do people suck?  It’s our biological inheritance combined with intelligence.  Yeah, there’s the “community” thing, but the “community” thing works because it is in everyone’s SELF-interest to make it work.

Actually, the most rational position to take is to pose as someone who is group-minded, but actually be self-minded and conceal one’s true motivations and misbehave surreptitiously..

Oh my that seems to be the human condition, isn’t it?

Anyway, Mario is right when he chides us for being enchanted by our own intellects because that is our highest value, at least on this site. He must include himself though.  If we were sports enthusiasts or porno stars, we might evaluate ourselves based on different criteria, but, here, all virtues pale in comparison to our ability to think critically and toss in a good bon mot or sly insult when the timing is right.

This is an observation of a teeny-tiny society on the internet.  Multiply it and change the “highest value” (money, power, attractiveness, athletic ability, etc.) and you end up with most human beings behaving very much like baboons.  I don’t exclude myself.

Do you think the “human condition” can be defined as “an over-interest in having rather than being?” And You’re right that I’m enchanted (good word BTW) with my own intelligence and also my own emotion. Rob once posted a thread on “hubris” that really hit home for me on this issue. Great read FWIW. I just read it before responding and cried because I’m certain he’s now dead. I liked him.

Love you all.  Your passion is strong.  Have fun.  I’m through swimming in this pool.  btw, I’m a 72 year old white chick from Brooklyn. Thanks for “dude”.  I’m flattered more than you can imagine.

I would not say Jesus lied. Assuming one takes the story at face value I’d say that Jesus placated his followers with yet another whimsical aphorism of dubious propositional content. Not discernibly true or false. Which, given the gravity of circumstance is probably worse than lying.

At least Mario gets to stretch his legs though.

Skeptics write, “Jesus Lied”, and then talk about it for days.

But what skeptics won’t write, or talk about for days, is that “Jesus Changed Human History And Even Today Two Thousand Years Later Will Inspire Give Strength To And Be Spoken To More Than Any Other Person In The History Of The World”.

No. Skeptics won’t write, talk about, admit, ponder, etc. this “Jesus”.

And, that makes skeptics a bunch of fucking idiots without the least sincerity of thought or rational integrity.

Jesus didn’t lie.

But skeptics lie constantly, to themselves and anyone else unfortunate enough to come into contact with them.

norrie, if you truly had “love” for us, you would not leave because you didn’t get your needs fulfilled.

Now run away and look for another place to tickle yourself and write platitudes without any meaning.

The last thing anyone needs is to listen to some empty-headed New Yorker who thinks her skin color, gender, age, and address are interesting subjects.

You did come here making claims about things a person living a shallow life could not possibly know or understand.

The Walking Dead just started a new season. Talk about that.

And, jb didn’t write those things; I did.

These posts are why, in part, BM has been caged.  BM is the personification, in expressed philosophy, of that man dressed in black with a face mask, before chopping off the hostage’s head.  “Believe in my god or I’ll kill you.”

What my posts actually say is, “If you’re gonna speak about God, and spirituality, and theism etc. as an expert on these subject, and at the same time be a person who has refused to give any time and sacrifice to these subjects, in fact have made it a point to avoid these subjects, then you should really shut the fuck up about these subjects because you’re ridiculing and believing yourself superior to people who have taken the time and made the sacrifice to know these subjects.”

But, Dennis’ inability to intellectually discern what is true from what is false because of his weak thinking in generalities has him equating those who kill with those who stand up for truth simply because the word “God” is in there somewhere.

Can this fool be any more transparently stupid?

And, why can he not see that by demanding that all theists become only “personal” in their faith he has become a rigid thinker hellbent on pushing his own agenda?

Because he’s stupid, that’s why.
