This summer we are flying to Billings, MT, renting a car, driving north to Alberta, and staying in Calgary the nights of July 5, 6 & 7.  Hopefully I’ll see Jefe and maybe the Calgary Stampede.  Then on to Banff, Lake Louise, and across to BC, down to Kalispell and Glacier National Park, then back to Billings and fly home.

Questions:

Anybody ever rented a car in the USA and driven to Canada?  Any special issues I need to know about?

Is it difficult crossing from MT to Alberta?  We’ll have our passports - any special issues ?

I’ve never crossed from one Canadian Province to another. Going from Alberta to BC this time.  Any issues?

Thanks.

No issues, don’t know about the car rental, my cousin had some reason for not renting a car to drive into Canada so best to check it out. Take a couple of extra days and drive from Lake Louise up the Ice Fields highway to Jasper, a fantastic trip.

On March 12 my wife and I are taking our oldest granddaughter to LA for a few days for her 16th BD.  Staying in The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica.  Just doing the tourist thing so the baby can see the big city.

In 2010, I drove a rental into Quebec from Vermont, then to Ontario and back to US at Niagara Falls. No issues.

Just got back from a long weekend at Big Bend National Park with my son-in-law and grandson.  Hiked a couple of trails, drove through the desert and mountains, watched my grandson skip rocks in the Rio Grande, bought some crafts from Mexicans who swim across the river.  Best of all, I totally forgot about my work for 4 days.  Tomorrow will take thought for its own evil.

Suggest that you spend more than a day driving up to Jasper. It’s only about 4 hours if you drive straight through, but you’ll want to stop at many places along the way (the Ice Field Lodge, for example, maybe take a trip out onto the glacier). Then overnight in Jasper, drive to Morain Lake the next day, back to Jasper and on from there. If it doesn’t fit your schedule that’s unfortunate, fantastic scenery.

I apparently will go by Emerald Lake on my way to Invermere, BC.  I’ll check it out - thanks.

So far, I’ve spent four days in Montana, and I can’t find anything I don’t like.  Tonight is my first night in Calgary.  My impression is that Calgary in July is like Dallas in late November.  Maybe Banff will be better.  Get thee to Montana, young man.
