This July we are doing a 2 week cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow.  To prepare, I’m reading War and Peace (1400 pages), studying Russian, and drinking vodka.  Just applied for my visa.

Damn you must be so bored to keep spending so much money just to have something to do smile

I love to travel, and I don’t plan to leave anything on the table.

Cool.  Is there a reason for this particular trip, or is it just a desire to see new and different places?

Trying to see the world.

Your penchant for vodka may come in handy, as it did for this comedian.

This is our Hill Country weekend to see the wildflowers and drink.  Starting in New Braunfels at the Faust Hotel, sitting at the bar drinking a flight and eating GERMAN NACHOS (imagine that!).  Next comes McAdoo’s, best seafood not on the coast.  Have a great weekend.

Bump. Are they like American nachos with bratwurst?

Leaving for Russia tomorrow. After tomorrow afternoon I’ll be incommunicado for about two weeks. Look forward to catching up when I return.

Have a great trip and keep a journal. If you get arrested, ask for vodka.

Random Notes from St. Petersburg:

1.  Many Russians don’t like Putin.  He was here in SP and caused massive traffic jams.  Our guides criticized him severely.

2.  Russians are just getting used to prosperity.  After the collapse of the Soviet Union, they had no word for “traffic jam”, as there were few cars.  Now jams are a daily occurrence.  Their word is “probka”, for “bung” - a stopper.

3.  There are a substantial number of monarchists, who want to restore the Romanov Czars.  The Russian Orthodox Church is growing in power, and it’s official position is that Russia should be ruled by Czars.  They think Putin is too weak.

4.  Friendliness is not the Russian strong suit, especially police and government officials.  However, they are immensely talented in so many ways.

5.  SP is a remarkable city - the architecture is stunning.

6.  Tomorrow I will brave the bus and subway systems on my own, and walk down their Main Street - Nevsky Prospect.

7.  Peter the Great was a genius, and was 6’8” tall.  He built SP as a naval town.  The Russian Navy is celebrating next week and war ships are anchored in the Neva River.

Cultural events so far:  Swan Lake ballet performance, Orthodox priests singing a cappella, and Cossack singing and dancing.  All fantastic.  Internet on ship is great right now, so I can post.
