Cultural events so far:  Swan Lake ballet performance, Orthodox priests singing a cappella, and Cossack singing and dancing.  All fantastic.  Internet on ship is great right now, so I can post.

Are there any trip wire words I ought not use in responding? Let me know and I’ll fill a page with them. wink

Random Notes from St. Petersburg:

1.  Many Russians don’t like Putin.  He was here in SP and caused massive traffic jams.  Our guides criticized him severely.

When you get a chance, ask them how they feel about the situation in Ukraine. My understanding is that the annexation of Crimea made Putin very popular. Even Gorbachev was said to have supported it. Have Russians soured on that along with Putin?

EN - 19 July 2019 08:26 AM

3.  There are a substantial number of monarchists, who want to restore the Romanov Czars.  The Russian Orthodox Church is growing in power, and it’s official position is that Russia should be ruled by Czars.  They think Putin is too weak.

Maybe that explains it.

It’s also possible that your guides are pandering to the (likely) anti-Putin sentiment of their American clients.

Looking back on all the recitals and concerts I’ve attended, no one is better able to perform music than the Russians. I guess that makes me a bigot.

And don’t forget the ballet.  I think EN has taken lessons - I still have a mental image of him in a tutu I can’t get rid of.

Fun?  Dare I risk soiling my virgin mind for a laugh?  Will you pay for my therapy?

Are Russians used to seeing many tourists, or are you receiving attention?  Meeting many English-speakers?

Have you been warned of places to avoid?

How’s the food?

I’ve heard there are still a lot of smokers (tobacco) there; have you enjoyed a good cigar?
