I will not deny an accusation of immaturity, but I just saw Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure for the first time in 20 years and it is still funny to me.  There is a song in it which got my attention for being a fun, rocking song, “Two Heads Are Better Than One” by Power Tool, and it is available only on YouTube, but the whole point of this post is that in the YouTube comments section someone posted some comic genius:

Oh my GOD do you hear it? do you? I hear COW BELL!!!!!?

(In case the comedy is lost on you:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN62KrzzVIU)

A sincere thanks for knocking Neil and Bruce and me off the home page.

I remember, some 45 years ago, when my bandmates insisted I get a cowbell so we could do Mississipi Queen. They would not do it until there was a cowbell. It turned into a gag. We’d be sitting at the table and Andy would start hitting the cowbell or a kitchen pot and we would have to jump up and start playing Mississipi Queen on anything handy by beat eight.

I love a good cowbell.

My good friend and drummer Mick used to put a little four beat injection in there at every opportunity.

I just found more cowbell.  Bachman Turner Overdrive’s “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” is all cowbell.

Should I re-name this The Cowbell Thread?

Ha! I never post here anymore, but lo and behold a notification showed up in my email today. Looks like Skip resurrected a three-year old thread.

Hope y’all are well. To answer the question in the post—it’s too late for 2020. I’m writing it off as a loss.

And I’ve moved beyond cowbell. I’ll all about the tambourine these days.

Thanks for checking in, and it’s a smart move to make the change since the tambourine is a good way to meet hot girls.

My only question for you is what the hell happened to Nebraska? They used to play football there.

Oh man. My personal opinion is that when the former AD (Scott Pederson) fired Osborne’s designated successor Frank Solich, he blew up a lot of the institutional memory and stability that had allowed the program to punch above it’s weight for many years. Callahan comes in from the NFL and tries to remake everything from scratch—that doesn’t work. Then Bo Pelini is brought in, but he’s got a hard ceiling AND rubs the fan base & trustees the wrong way (coarse, doesn’t kiss enough “Nebraska Nice” ass, etc.).

None of that would have been fatal, except we fled the Big XII for the Big Ten. Which means we turned out back on a lot of traditional scouting and had to start all over again. And in the meantime, the college FB landscape had changed drastically since the 90’s. The recruiting realities are WAY different; most every halfway decent Power Five school has a good weight program (Nebraska used to be sorta cutting edge on that back in the day, but now everybody’s caught up and many have passed us). We thought we could throw our weight around in the new conference—instead, we found it hard to even be competitive.

For another few years, trustees and the fan base deluded themselves. Pelini burned enough bridges that they could justify firing him, and they brought in the anti-Pelini: Mike Riley of Oregon State. Super nice guy; super-mediocre coach. Pelini’s teams had been a bit surly and self-destructive, but they also had a bit of competitive bite to them, even if they often saw their own fan base as an antagonist. Riley’s teams were just…soft. Very soft.

SO…the fan base clamors for former QB Scott Frost to come in and be the savior. He’d had a great year at U of Central Florida and somehow everybody convinced themselves that this meant he was destined for great things at a Power Five school, so we broke the bank luring him back home before some other lucky program scooped him up.

We might have saved another fan base with that one, because here at the end of Frost’s third year, he sure doesn’t look like he’s got what it takes. Not a winning season yet (even Riley managed one of those in his dismal three years) and the team seems to be getting worse not better. Last year was the first year since the 60’s we didn’t send a single player to the NFL. Recruiting classes come in with promise and bail, sometimes in their freshman year. The rest of the Big Ten thinks we’re a joke. Young kids back home are starting to not care. The trustees can probably thank COVID for saving the sellout streak this year.

At least we’ve got a kickass Women’s Volleyball team…

Good to see you!

Cindy Wilson is nothing to sneeze at, but I’m a Kate Pierson guy myself. You?
