This thread is intended as a single repository of patrons’ endorsements of films, TV, etc.

It is an alternative to the little threads that slip down the list and disappear onto the second page. This one will be a sticky.

All posters are welcome to put their recommendations here.

In other words, a Jar For Distractions, a “What are you drinking now?” thread for entertainment.  I like the idea.

New Star Wars film.  Lousy.  All bright lights and huge machines with little story and cardboard characters.

Dennis,

Which way are those thumbs pointing?

Maybe we need a What Sucks thread.

Oops, sorry.  Once again I’m being oppositional.  Cranky, maybe.  Blame it on EN.

Here you go, my guilty pleasure is a Brit TV series which is now in it’s third series I think…

It’s called “Peaky Blinders”

Peaky Blinders is a television crime drama based upon the exploits of the Peaky Blinders gang, operating in Birmingham, England during the aftermath of the First World War.

If you get the chance, have a look.

BBC TV - Orphan Black. Season one was intriguing, season two was kind of boring, season three was awesome.

Book:
Anathem by Neal Stephenson
the Baroque Cycle series is also very good.

World War Z as the multicast, if possible unabridged audiobook. But stay away from the movie.

What’s the TV equivalent of a book that is a “page turner”?

Recently watched “page turner”  TV:

“Billions” = US, thriller type of drama. With Paul Giamatti as the US Attorney of New York chasing Damien Lewis as the superstar hedge fund manager. Fraud, debauchery, treachery, all the good stuff. Watch it when you’re not feeling prudish though.

“No Offence” = Nicely done British crime/detective drama, with a comic edge, written by Paul Abbott who also worked on UK’s “Cracker” and created UK’s “Shameless”, so you’re guaranteed some entertainment.

“Marcella” = quality British crime drama with lots of twisting and turning, starring Anna Friel, and in the same genre and general “Scandinavian style” as “The Killing”. But less frustrating. And they’re making a second series!

And the film I’m (re-)watching right now:

“Elizabeth:The Golden Age”—the 2007 sequel/sister film to “Elizabeth” (1998)—historical drama about, of course, the life of the amazing Queen Elizabeth I, played in both films by the amazing Cate Blanchett (and Geoffrey Rush appears in both films too). Outstanding costumes and the acting’s none too shabby neither. Must see.
