How do I make my photo files smaller? It keeps saying they exceed 75 kb, or if it’s below 75, the dimensions are wrong.
It’s a two-step process. First, make sure the photo does not exceed 600 pixels in either dimension. Then set the jpeg compression to render the file smaller than 75k. It can take a few tries.
How do I “set the jpeg compression”? I have Windows 8.1.
You can easily resize and specify file size (by dimensions) in XnView and IrfanView, and I’m sure there are others. Those two are very easy to use though—can’t speak for others. XnView is newer, IrfanView’s been around for a while and has been updated regularly. XnView seems more inuitive (IIRC). I’ve used IrfanView for a while though, so I have messed with XnView very much.
I use photoshop, which makes jpegs adjustable. I’m spoiled.
Without such an adjustment, try it this way…
If 600 pixels saves as more than 75k, reduce the image to 500 pixels and save as a second version. If still over 75k, try a third version at 450 pixels and so on until it is 75k or less. Even just 300 pixels is a decent size in a post box. The avatars are 100 x 100 pixels for reference.
Hosts and resizes photos. Messageboard sizes and avatar(100x100) sizes. You can copy and paste the direct link into your browser address bar to display the newly sized image and then save it to your own computer and upload it to here using the attachments button when you’re writing a post (above preview/submit buttons) or if it’s for your avatar you can upload it by accessing your control panel (which should appear on a drop down menu under your name at the very top of this site?).
That’s the only way I’ve discovered so far.
