I just read an opinion piece by Daniel Sarewitz in Nature. He has a very interesting and controversial point of view on the role of basic research in society. He essentially questions the idea that the intellectual free-play of scientists ensures progress. As a result, he believes that the ever-growing scientific enterprise is headed towards destruction. As graduate student in neuroscience, these objections make me feel very uncomfortable. I would love to hear Sam’s opinion on Sarewitz. Here are two of his articles:
