“super low sensory environment” probably applies to driving long distances at night too, where sometimes all you have to look at is the patch of highway illuminated by your headlights. 

Another aspect that I conjecture might play a role is the un-natural aspect of the lighting; high contrast, hightly directional illumination can create unexpected shadows and motion (when you or the source are moving) of shadows that are unfamiliar to cognition and might even stimulate the lower level processing centers in the brain in unusual ways.
