The best cup of coffee I ever had was an Ethiopian blend in the New Delhi, India airport. It totally surprised me.  Now every morning I have two HEB (a Texas grocery store) Keurig cups - an Ethiopian Yirgaccheffe (medium roast) and a Sumatran Gayo Mountain (dark roast) to start my day.  Wonderful!!

I start my day with 8 cups of heavy black coffee. I buy Costco whole beans (top quality at half the price) and grid 10 scoops each morning. Kirkland Espresso blend roasted by Starbucks) in my new favorite but their Sumatran and Ethiopian beans are great too.

I drink one cup per day.  More, and I have trouble sleeping.  But I do enjoy that one cup!

I worry about you, GAD.  Blood pressure OK?

Excellent. I always get the “oh wow, that is really good” comment.

I buy Costco whole beans (top quality at half the price) and grid ... each morning

This.

Kirkland brand for weekdays.  Zavida brand vanilla hazelnut for weekends.  Always go-cups.

I refuse to spend $7 or more on a cuppa joe.

I make 12 cups a day at home and it costs me about $3 a week for great coffee, you can’t beat Costco on coffee. I thought about K-cups but even at a low 25cents a cup that would cost me $21 a week and they don’t taste near as good.

That and if your coffee maker bites it, you can get a new one for $20.

HA! that happened to me about 6mos ago, I got up pressed the start button and click nothing, I tried again, click nothing, panic was starting to set in, I unplugged it and plugged it back in, nothing! Garbed my keys and off to the supermarket the only thing open at 7am, and what did they have but a nice black&decker; 12cup on sale for $20, 20min later I had my coffee.

Science Says Drinking Your Coffee This Way Means You’re More Likely to Be a Psychopath

I usually drink mine black, so I’m not going to share this study with my wife.

I tried cream in my coffee once, at a diner when I was still in high school. Almost made me puke. Maybe I’m a psychopath, or at least able to paranoiacally spot one; I must be something terrible! Sugar in coffee, too, is anathema for me, though I have a severe, though more or less controlled, sweet tooth.

I like mine black, the stronger and blacker the better, sugar in coffee is sickening.

More into tea myself, but an occasional coffee is a pleasure. There is a small coffee shop in Tucson, The Raging Sage, that has the most excellent coffee and also baked goods, which are prepared at the shop each morning. The best scones ever. And for my sweet tooth, a Cubano: espresso, where the water is expressed through a combination of espresso and brown sugar and then frothed with half and half into a delightful 8 oz drink.

Finally a topic close to my heart. Bulk coffee isn’t good. That’s just a fact. Premium single origin beans roasted correctly are only available from small batch producers. Light and medium roasts that should not feature the acrid tones of dark roasting are only possible in small, supervised batches where machinery is clean. This simply isn’t possible in factory production. National distributors must maintain a company standard which, in turn means that they must buy in huge quantities which, in turn means they rely on factory production.

We can acknowledge that personal preference is inscrutable but please put this to the test if you can. Get a properly pulled espresso shot from an independent small batch roaster. Make sure the barista is on point and cleaning their machinery and using clean water. Notice that it isn’t bitter. Notice that the tones are distinct and clear and actually correspond to what is claimed on the label. Now try the same shot using beans from a grocery store or a starbucks or some other high volume source. Notice the bitterness. Notice the muddiness. Notice the inconsistency from one cup to the next.

It’s really important. I want you to love your coffee.
