Game twelve ended with an unexpected draw. Caruana was really going for it, but then he took his foot off the gas at just the wrong moment. Carlsen came back strong, but then suddenly (and unfathomably, according to the pundits) offered a draw! Caruana, behind at this point, gratefully accepted. People are saying Carlsen is running scared now, that offering a draw in that position is something he never would have considered before. Caruana is still considered the weaker player in “rapid chess,” which is where they’re headed on Wednesday to break the tie. But will Carlsen’s uncharacteristic timidity come into play? My money’s on Carlsen, although I’m rooting for Caruana.

Carlson wins the first of four rapid games. They get a ten-minute break before game two.

Caruana resigns after 28 moves in the second game. All Carlsen needs to do is draw either of the next two games to retain his crown.

Carlsen won 3-0 in rapids, so he is the winner.

ASD, I’m on Lichess right now.  I see you set up a game, looks like I’m white.  Should I go ahead and move, or do you want to wait until 8:30 CST?

I missed the third game. I think this was the expected result, though. Carlsen is known for being very good at rapid chess, but it’s said to be Caruana’s weak point. Historic match! Neither player seemed interested in visiting the White House when asked about it during the final press conference.

Forget the World Championships.  ASD and I just played to a draw on Lichess. That’s where the really exhilarating action is!

What about sharing a match here? How quick are your games?

Maybe screen captures or a log of moves? We could use some upscale Bread and Circus.

Sure. We are planning to start playing every Wednesday night, unless out of town, etc.  This game went about an hour and a half or two, I guess.  Screen shots might be feasible.  ASD?

That is a quick game. Long ago, I played matches by mail and the games could take most of a year.

The only reason the game ended in a draw was because EN felt sorry for me. Or maybe he just wanted to go to bed. The screen shot below shows the board when the game ended. It’s white’s turn. That’s me. The situation is obviously hopeless as white is in fatal “zugzwang.”

It was nevertheless a fun game. For someone who hasn’t played in ten years, EN played amazingly well. I’ll have my work cut out for me if he starts practicing again.

According to the analysis engine, I had the opportunity to checkmate him earlier in the game, but I would have had to see twelve moves in advance and trade both my rooks for his queen.

I was sweating it at this point. If he had traded his two rooks for my queen, his queen would have chased me all over the place and killed me.

White should have won. Black’s power is bottled up. Spend the rooks, dance the queen around the king… then, in with the bishop.

Cool beans. Thanks for sharing, lads.
