Below is a link to the Vox article entitled, Brain-reading tech is coming. The law is not ready to protect us. In the era of neurocapitalism, your brain needs new rights. Written by Sigal Samuel

https://tinyurl.com/y3d7s2jt

Over the past few weeks, Facebook and Elon Musk’s Neuralink have announced that they’re building tech to read your mind — literally.

Mark Zuckerberg’s company is funding research on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that can pick up thoughts directly from your neurons and translate them into words. The researchers say they’ve already built an algorithm that can decode words from brain activity in real time.

And Musk’s company has created flexible “threads” that can be implanted into a brain and could one day allow you to control your smartphone or computer with just your thoughts. Musk wants to start testing in humans by the end of next year.

In the article, neuroethicist, Marcello Ienca, proposes a new set of human rights laws protecting the privacy of one’s own mind. (Yes, it’s coming to that).

There is a bottomless pit of possibilities with this new technology. Some can be for very positive uses, e.g., giving paralyzed people some form of mobility. Others for more sinister “Big Brother” reasons, such as having ones brain altered against ones wishes, secretly or accidentally.

Many of the embedded links in this article are fascinating reads unto themselves.

Once the Genie is out of the lab there is no going back, the tech will be used for good as well as bad just like everything else.

Yep.  “Hmmmmmmm. . .  How can I use this to kill or steal?” and “We found a cure for cancer!”

Then how will we respond to create diversionary tactics to fool the technology?  We can begin to routinely create deceptive thoughts, the mental equivalent of fake military movements.  Autonomy will have to be won with a fight in the future.

Sounds like a lot of good sci-fi is coming!

There’ll be no more unfair advantages for those Betazoids.  Communicator badges won’t only have universal translators, but also empathicators.

I see Blade Runner in reverse.  The machines are chasing us to analyze our thoughts, but we develop counter measures to confound them and maintain our autonomy and lives.

Yeah, resistance is NOT futile.

Don’t forget the most obvious — whenever a new technology is created, it won’t be long before it’s used somehow for pornography.

We will not legislate the danger away. The key is to take control. Make these developments open source. Read them before they read you!

One of my weaknesses is fromage-filled scifi, and a T movie with Arnie and Linda is all the way up my alley.

Definitely ... top of the sci-fi genre.  Sarah Connor’s (Linda) kick-ass abilities being up right up there with only a few rivals – Ellen Ripley (Sigourney) of all things Alien is another favourite of mine.

The perfect role for Arnie – robotic one-liners + physical attributes – the opening scene of T1 comes to mind ... naked Arnie in all his glory.  His role in these movies has changed somewhat; it should be fun to see this new one (thanks for the clip, LJ).

T1 was one of the greatest movies of all time - makes my top 25.

But without the music.

Then there’s reality:  http://billmckibben.com/falter.html  FALTER is a powerful and sobering call to arms, to save not only our planet but also our humanity itself.

What could possibly go wrong?

quote:  In 2015 a study in the Journal of Mathematical Biology pointed out that if the world’s oceans kept warming, by 2100 they might become hot enough to “stop oxygen production by phytoplankton by disrupting the process of photosynthesis.”  Given that two-thirds of the earth’s oxygen comes from phytoplankton, that would “likely result in the mass mortality of animals and humans.”

“No one has done more than Bill McKibben to raise awareness about the great issues of our time. Falter is an essential book - honest, far-reaching and, against the odds, hopeful.”

—Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction
