What if polls convince Trump he is not going to win in 2020?  Will he rally his base to cancel the election?

quotes from this article:

What if Trump won’t accept 2020 defeat?
The situations all seem far-fetched, but the president’s comments have people chattering in the halls of Congress and throughout the Beltway.

Trump continues to talk up the prospect that he could serve past the constitutionally mandated period. On Twitter last weekend, Trump pondered, “do you think the people would demand that I stay longer?” The line mirrored language he used at a rally in Pennsylvania last month where he talked about living in the White House for 20 years.

“We ran one time and we’re 1-and-0. But it was for the big one. Now we’re going to have a second time. And we’re going to have another one. And then we’ll drive them crazy,” Trump said. “And maybe if we really like it a lot — and if things keep going like they’re going — we’ll go and we’ll do what we have to do. We’ll do a three and a four and a five.”

The president has long casually toyed with the idea that he could stay in office beyond the constitutionally set maximum.

In March 2018, Trump praised the ruling Communist Party of China for abolishing presidential term limits. Then, a month later, he publicly pondered why he couldn’t be in office for 16 years, an apparent reference to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who died during his fourth term. The 22nd Amendment, ratified a few years after Roosevelt’s death, prohibited future presidents from serving more than two consecutive elected terms.

It’s not just talk of extending term limits that have raised questions about the president’s respect for the next cycle. During the 2016 campaign, Trump stoked fears among his supporters that the election would be “rigged” and he refused to state during his final debate with Hillary Clinton that he’d concede to his Democratic opponent if she won.

Trump will claim to have won the 2020 election no matter what.
His hope is that blatant Russian election meddling will make it easy to challenge the results for months and months - assuming he loses.
If he wins, none of those hackings will matter.

Trump has a strong motivation to stay in office given that there are some legal matters that are on hold until he’s no longer president ...

quote from this article:

Remember, when Trump was merely a private citizen running for President in 2016, he became the first presidential candidate in recent memory to refuse to commit that he’d honor the results of the election if he lost. Now, he occupies the Oval Office. He’s the commander in chief of the most powerful military on Earth. If he even hints at contesting the election result in 2020, as he suggested he might in 2016, he’d be doing so not as an outsider but as a leader with the vast resources of the US government potentially at his disposal.
Trump’s unrelenting assaults on the media and intelligence community, augmented by his baseless insistence on widespread voter fraud, have laid the groundwork for him to contest the election results in worrisome ways by undermining two institutions Americans would count on to validate those results.

Could Trump get the support of the military the way he presently has the near unanimous support of Republicans?

I do believe that the military would stay out of a Washington power struggle, simply because I would go insane otherwise.
Of course, the US had a Military Coup financed by Big Money that only failed because one man believed in democracy.
Not sure such a person exists today.

In 2016, West Virginia voted 68.5% for Trump.  If national polls suggested that he was going to lose in 2020, is it far-fetched to believe that West Virginia might use their National Guard to close the polls in Charleston?  Shots fired?  Civil war like Trump mentioned to his supporters?  Other states that would rally to keep him in power?  https://www.cheatsheet.com/culture/states-that-love-donald-trump.html/

Except . . . why is Bloomberg starting to look good?  Because he can outspend the Russians?

Trump might use the fear of the Corona Virus to call off the election..
