fair-weather capitalists, the whole lot.

If you let the invisible hand of the market do its thing, sooner or later it’s going to go up your arse.

The leadership certainly sells this bill of goods. But Texas is close to an even split with voters. It’s a Red stronghold because of leverage. One possible silver lining to this catastrophe is that it consolidates and strengthens the already surging opposition.

Seen online:

If this happened in venezuela or cuba, the right would claim it as proof that socialism doesn’t work.  As an effect of under-regulsted capitalism: crickets.

The news coming out of Texas continues and worsens.  It brings back unpleasant memories of the Ice Storm of 98.  As bad as that storm was, things appear even worse for Texans, where in addition to the cold, ice and power outages, water is now a serious issue.  In some places there’s shortage of drinking water and even food, in addition to burst water pipes.

Has anyone instructed the people of Texas how to avert pipes freezing in their homes?  That hot water taps can be left on at a very slow trickle to help keep them from freezing, and if that’s insufficient or when evacuating the home, that water should be turned off at the main and pipes drained to prevent them bursting?

And it appears that Texans have been literally left out in the cold by their governments.  These cold-hearted politicians need to reap what they sow and be given the cold shoulder at the next election.

As Beau says,

“... they froze figuratively, while their constituents froze literally ...
... and Texas is finding out that sometimes the tough guy doesn’t wear cowboy boots and a white hat, sometimes she wears high heels.”

I’ll let you know what my next electric bill is.  Right now, we made it through with no power outage, no water problems, no frozen pipes, and only 2 hours of interrupted Internet service.  It is 57 degrees now and everything is melting. But I will have to say that frozen snow is something else to deal with. We had a lot of powdery snow, then a layer of freezing rain and several very cold days. So all the snow froze.  I have a gate in my backyard that is used for access to my driveway, and there were several inches of ice blocking it.  It’s in the shade, so it didn’t melt. I spent an hour chopping it out with a pick.  Fun.

Yes, our government is now the envy of——- no one. They made a bet and lost. We will see if that changes any voters’ minds in a couple of years.  The demographics eventually will disfavor the GOP, but how long that will take is unknown.

Glad you made it through with minor inconveniences, EN.  The weather report says temps have returned to normal.

Yes, 70 degrees and birds chirping like nothing happened.  Looks like those who will get high bills were buying electricity wholesale, so it went sky-high.  I have a locked-in rate.  Glad for that.

Did you hear the one about the Russian who moved to Texas to build a better life?

He froze to death inside his own home.

Maybe it’s not the most tasteful joke but can we PLEASE put American exceptionalism to bed once and for all?

How much evidence do we need to finally get it in our head that this country has failed?
