The full title of the New York Times video is:
“Day of Rage: An In-Depth Look at How a Mob Stormed the Capitol”
I hope there is no pay wall for viewing this video.

https://nyti.ms/2UUXgu0

I remember watching the attack as it was happening on January 6. The live coverage was chaotic and piecemeal, usually shot from a safe distance. You never really got a full sense of what was happening. This NYT video covers the whole thing. It is spliced together footage from not only media outlets but also footage taken by the rioters themselves.

The video tracks, in sequence, the storming of the Capitol building. At 40 minutes in length, it shows the timeline of the events which lead up to the attack, events which occurred during the attack, and the resolution of the attack when reinforcements finally arrived hours later.

It follows certain individuals, such as the leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. It shows the positions of the woefully small and inadequate Capitol Police Force which had to deal with the violent mob. And is shows the hurried evacuation of both Republican and Democratic politicians, who barely made it to safety.

After watching this video, my first reaction was one of shock and surprise. I knew the attack was bad, but I had no idea just how bad it really was. Except for pure luck, the valiant efforts of the overwhelmed police force, and a few heads-up moves by certain individuals, officer Goodman in particular, these rioters came amazingly close to capturing and possibly murdering members of the government.

Those who were in charge of the Capitol Police and who had been warned about the massing mob, but chose to do nothing, should not only be fired but also prosecuted. And as far as the members of the mob who thought they were doing Trump’s wishes goes, I hope they all get the most severe punishment possible under the law. I hope every one of them does prison time. They are not only traitors, but they are also idiots. Dangerous idiots. Idiots doing the bidding of a clown.

I don’t think the GOP has found a flea collar that will get this oaf off their backs.  The more crimes he commits the more his base likes him.  Tax evasion?  “That’s because he’s a genius.”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6GaVZuXa6U  Can Republicans win without the support of his base?  No.

Another day of rage?  https://news.yahoo.com/news/news/dhs-report-warns-of-possible-july-4th-militia-gathering-in-washington-dc-105928518.html

More tellingly to me, the FBI, National Guard, and Homeland Security all took the lead up to this event as not a serious threat.  I’m reminded of all the effort the FBI took to investigate MLK jr.  This wasn’t just an organized insurrection (although poorly), it was a publicly organized insurrection.

edit: Continuing to watch.  One thing is very clear to me… the revolution will be televised.

I wonder how many of those who attended and were subsequently picked-up due to GPS on their devices, were also worried about vaccine-carried microchips…

I think most of the rioters were being spontaneous, with no plan whatsoever. They were just part of Trump’s most loyal followers who totally believed his lies about the election being stolen. However, they were looking for a fight. As the Capitol police got overwhelmed, and they realized they could break into the Capitol Building, they got bolder and became a more cohesive mob.

In the NYT video, the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys clearly had a plan they were attempting to carry out. They truly are seditionists and traitors. If things had gone more their way, I wonder what they would have done if they had captured Nancy Pelosi or Mike Pence?

And as you and others have alluded, if this was a huge Black Lives Matter protest outside the Capitol Building, you can bet the FBI, National Guard and Homeland Security would have made their presence known. There seems to have been an unspoken attitude among those in charge of Capitol security, that these were just peaceful, middle class, white people, (like us), who were showing support for Trump. They call themselves patriots who “support the blue.” How they possibly do any harm? Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. We don’t want to appear like bullies on television. “Think of the optics.”

Even if Trump is sentenced to prison for treason, it will only enhance his standing with his base.  Ghost writers will help him write his 2024 manifesto:  THE ART OF THE LIE

quote:  “In the aftermath of the failed “putsch,” or coup d’état, Hitler was convicted of treason and sentenced to five years in prison. He spent less than a year behind bars, during which time he dictated “Mein Kampf,” his political autobiography. The putsch and Hitler’s subsequent trial turned him into a national figure.”

why do so many people believe trump?

1.  So many people are white supremacists.  They believe someone who supports what they believe.

2.  So many people are evangelical Christians.  Trump held up a Bible in front of a church so they think he must be one of them.  He is God’s choice for president.
Watch video if you’re not convinced:  https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/kenneth-copeland-blow-coronavirus-pray-sermon-trump-televangelist-a9448561.html

3.  So many people listened to Rush Limbaugh every day, agreeing with his lies.  Trump awarded him the Medal of Freedom.  https://theyearsproject.com/learn/news/rushing-to-conclusions-rush-limbaugh/

“The corona virus is the common cold folks!”  https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/feb/27/rush-limbaugh/fact-checking-rush-limbaughs-misleading-claim-new-/

To repeat your question - Why do so many people believe falsehoods?  Poorly educated?  Anti science?

Short answer to your question - they know more than anyone that he’s not lying when he says he knows more than anyone about anything.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49kG7HfD-oM

why do so many people believe trump?

I think for most Trump supporters who say they “want their country back,” to which the slogan “Make America Great Again” alludes, is a yearning to return to a white majority, a white dominant culture, and a white religious tradition. I think Reagan touched this nerve originally back in the 80s. Reagan was all about nostalgia for 1950s white America. He spoke in dog whistles and the racism at the bottom of it all was not so obvious.

Trump, on the other hand, is not afraid to embrace his white supremacist supporters. He probably understands that the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are at the extreme end of his hardcore supporters, and that nonviolent small town white Americans and Evangelicals make up most of the rest. Nonetheless they all share the same fear — the fear that brown skinned minorities will soon become the majority, and that America will embrace multiculturalism. The fierce loyalty Trump inspires is the tribal loyalty of being part of the white race and holding dear the values of 1950s America. The hackneyed cries against socialism and communism, and the absurd levels of spending on the military, as if we were still in the Cold War, all hearken back to the 50s.

Let’s go back to Living in the Past.

Happy 4th.

why do so many people believe trump?

I think the problem with this question is that while there are many commonalities between answers, there is also a specific variation of that answer that is unique to every individual.
