I recently got a notification that this site was not private and secure.  I had to agree to enter in spite of risks.  Burt told me it worked so I did it, and here I am. Anyone know what that was all about?

The site owners/admins forgot to renew a security certificate for the login engine (I’d guess…it is a standard thing for sites with login credentials).
If that is the case, once the certificate (virtual) is updated, the message ‘should’ go away.
For a corporation, this is probably a 2-4 day exercise.  For this forum, your guess is as good as mine (Or Mart/Nhoj’s).
This site is no less secure because of that, but in most cases I’d advise a unique login for online forums that doesn’t relate to any real-life information or security.

Thanks.  I’m having to do this on every single post.  What a giant pain in the arse.

I think this happened once before.  I also notice that the small-print link to the forum previously at the bottom of Harris’ homepage is now gone.

I was unable to access the site at all from Google and had to go through Internet Explorer and select to open despite ‘not recommended’ warning.

I do hope this gets fixed soon so we don’t lose any of our dwindling membership - not ready to say bye.

Has it been fixed?  I didn’t have to go through all the crap this time.

Been having the same problem.  This morning I worked on a post but it vanished when I pressed the ‘submit’ button.  Just now got here without the ‘unsafe’ notice blocking the way.  The bar at the top still says ‘Not secure’.  Is that permanent?

I’m not even getting the notice anymore.  I think Nhoj paid the light bill.

Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead

Firefox detected an issue and did not continue to forum.samharris.org. The website is either misconfigured or your computer clock is set to the wrong time.

It’s likely the website’s certificate is expired, which prevents Firefox from connecting securely. If you visit this site, attackers could try to steal information like your passwords, emails, or credit card details.

What can you do about it?

The issue is most likely with the website, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it. You can notify the website’s administrator about the problem.

Either the security certificate is out of date, or the forum time problem has finally caught up with us.

This has happened before. Due to a lack of attention, the site’s ‘security certificate’ has expired and has not been renewed. I have alerted an Uber and we can wait for help. I presume.

Karl says, “What forum are you talking about? Can you send us a link? And a screen shot of what this forum looks like?” They do not want to appear to eager, I guess.

The risk is low if patrons want to proceed with an unsecured connection. The issue is neglect and not hacking. I presume.

As always, we apologize for any inconvenience.

EN, thanks for letting me know this.  I only access the internet on one device - a laptop; I have a cell phone but not a smart phone.

There also seems to be a difference depending on the browser being used.  I can’t access at all using my usual Chrome, but can using IE after bypassing a warning.  ASD appears to be accessing using Firefox, also with a warning.

On the day this first happened, (around the time of the terrorist bombing at the Kabul airport), I posted a link to the 80 million bombs scattered over Laos and Cambodia and all the men, women, and children who continue to be killed and maimed by them.  https://vault.sierraclub.org/sierra/201101/laos.aspx

This led me to the paranoid thought that the CIA was blocking the forum to prevent any further reminders about U.S. bombing practices.  A friend reassured me.  “Relax.  No one is paying any attention to your posts.”

Well, it seems this site’s access problem is not yet fixed, which is a nuisance.

I wonder if some members might refrain from logging on/posting due to difficulties and warnings.

Currently I can logon by using an alternate browser (IE) from my usual one and ignoring the warning.  However, in that browser I cannot click on and open links; I have to copy/paste the link address into another browser.
